An elderly man named Duke (James Garner) read’s from an old worn notebook to Allie Calhoun (Gena Rowlands) whom he visit’s in a nursing home. As he read’s aloud, a blossoming romance from the page’s of the notebook soon begin to reveal itself. However, their love affair is stopped short due to the outbreak of World War 2. When he return’s from serving in the army after the war, he find’s that his love is engaged to be married to another man but they cannot escape the feeling’s they have for one another.
